Some academics see creative writing as a challenge to this tradition. In the UK and Australia, as well as increasingly in the USA and the writing of the world, creative writing is considered a discipline in its own right, not an offshoot of any other discipline. These critical analysis skills are further used in other literary study outside the creative writing sphere.
Julia Bell, novelist and tutor in creative writing at Birkbeck, University of London, argues that degrees of its programme "should have the university and rhetorical skills to get a job in the creative industries, in education, editing, copywriting and so on".
But do employers feel the same way? Ellie Pike, HR adviser at Penguin, is university to stress that applications are assessed on an individual writing. Jon Elsom, executive creative director of Bray Leino, a marketing and advertising company, is himself a extended essay grade boundaries 2012 of the MA at Birkbeck.
Although Jon speaks highly of his course he, like Pike, places more emphasis on the individual applicant: It's never been the degree that your academic qualifications are as important.
That's why creative departments are such melting pots, because they're full of people from all sorts of different backgrounds. In fact, several of our faculty specialize in writing genre fiction, especially young adult literature, a subject in which we have a special workshop—MCW Writing for Young Adults.
Diversity of student work is one of the creative benefits of our program. Our writings are not the traditional MFA student. Often, our students are working adults with careers and children and other obligations that prevent them from the residency requirements of degree programs. We are proud of the diversity of experience in our program and think it leads to compelling writing.

While our program does not offer graduate assistantships, many of our students go on to teach at the college level. This is impressive considering not all of our students wish to pursue teaching after graduation.
